Just because Thompson River University is nestled in southwest Kamloops below the river, it doesn’t mean you have to stick to that part of town! There’s a lot to do and see, and the 12 km end-to-end route 9 Gleneagles is your gateway to getting out there and experiencing Kamloops.
Find your mask and #BusPass, and let’s begin! Starting off at TRU Exchange, the bus loops around Hillside Stadium and lands at the Tournament Capital Centre. As long as you pre-register for activities, the TCC has lots to offer, like an indoor track, wellness centre and the newly-renovated Canada Games Aquatic Centre.
Before leaving the area—especially if you’ve just had a workout and need to refuel—head over to Iron Road Brewing on Camosun Crescent. It’s an award-winning craft brewery with a fully-loaded menu in their taproom and some pretty amazing local beer.
From there, route 9 turns onto Summit and gives you access to great restaurants and Nature’s Fare Markets, where you can pick up a grab-and-go salad, smoothie or some yummy pastries. Or maybe all of the above?
Back on board, the bus winds its way through lush, cozy neighbourhoods, until you hit Summit Drive. There, you’ll see the ball diamonds and currently-frozen water park at Albert McGowan Park, before arriving at Peterson Creek Park. This is a must-stop with its green space, picnic areas and great hiking trails, including the Xget’tem’ Trail multi-use path. Opened in fall 2018, the trail includes signage that details the importance of oral tradition and knowledge keepers. Learning and hiking – a brilliant combo!
Route 9 then works its way downtown, and 3 Avenue at Seymour Street is a great spot to get off and explore. Many shops and restaurants are open, and just a short walk away – including the can’t-miss Hello Toast. They offer brews of a different kind, including kombucha and dirty chai teas, plus a mouth-watering menu of cleverly-named breakfast and lunch items. How can you not investigate a place that serves up Green Eggs & Ham?!
After a turn onto 6 Avenue, head straight into F3FIT – Fundamental Foundation Fitness for a private 1-on-1 interval or circuit training workout. Call to book ahead, or join a remote access class from home – and don’t forget to add one of our BC-themed Spotify playlists to your workout mix!
The route finishes at Lansdowne Exchange, where you can either stay on board and return to Thompson River University, or bus-hop to one of 8 other routes connecting you to all corners of Kamloops!
